OpenAI just kicked off their 12 Days of Christmas🎄where they’re releasing something new every day for 12 days.

On Day 1, they dropped the full version of GPT-01—their exciting new “thinking” model with vision capabilities.

I’m anxiously waiting to see what’s next, but for now, let’s dive into this first release and a fun test I ran.

The Experiment: Counting Capsules 🧴

This test sounds simple, but the point is to test if this vision capability can properly combine with the “thinking” capability. (I think it should be able to easily)

I uploaded this photo of capsules I took with my phone (the actual count is 44):

Then I asked GPT-01 to count them.

Result #1: It guessed 34 capsules—off by 10! 😬

I tried again, asking ChatGPT to break the image into smaller sections to make it easier.

Result #2: It improved slightly, guessing 35 capsules.

To be honest, I’m a little surprised - and disappointed - that it was unable to pass this test. But it is important to be honest with ourselves and not overhype (or underhype) the progress. I’m sure this will get better soon.

Takeaway:
While GPT-01’s vision feature shows promise, it still has some work to do. It’s better than GPT-4o, but it’s not quite where you’d expect a "thinking" model to be yet.

I’m going to be running more experiments (and sharing them) in the coming days…
