- OpenAI's new "Thinking" Model
Hi guys,
A few minutes after I sent yesterday’s email, OpenAI actually released their new “thinking” model.
I think this will be a game-changer.
One of the biggest problems with large language models is that they hallucinate—they make things up.
🧮 Imagine using a calculator to do a math calculation, but about 20% of the time, the calculator gets it wrong!
That would make it worthless. 😅
But this new “thinking” model changes the game.
Here's the Test I Gave It:
Write a coherent sentence where the first word has 1 letter, the next word has 2 letters, the next word has 3 letters, the next word has 4 letters, the next word has 5 letters, the next word has 6 letters, and the last word has 7 letters.
I gave this prompt to both GPT-4o and 01-preview.
GPT-4o’s response:
I am not here right beside anyone waiting.
Lol. 😆
First of all, the sentence has 8 words, not 7. Second, it’s a very bizarre sentence—definitely not coherent.
So this is a big fail for GPT-4o.
But it's not surprising because this task is extremely difficult for a typical LLM.
ChatGPT 01-preview response:
I go and meet their leader tonight.
Perfect! 🎉
It “thought” for 48 seconds as well.
The model needed all 48 seconds (which is extremely long in “computer time”) to get this right.
It needed to do a lot of planning and trial and error (in the background) before answering.
The Power of the "Thinking" Feature 🧠
One interesting aspect is that the model didn’t need to improve at all to unlock this “thinking” feature.
Instead of ChatGPT just spitting out the first answer that it thinks of, it gives itself time to run tests, do planning, and run little experiments in the background before answering.
Then it does a final check to see if the answer is correct.
And finally, it gives you the answer.
This concept is incredibly powerful.
